Moving from out of state for job based in Santa Clarita (Oxnard: living, budget)

My office will be in Santa Clarita, but I have no interest in living there or anywhere east or south of there. Hence, I am looking to live in the Ventura, Oxnard, Ojai areas. I don't want to live further west, because I know the commute from Ventura is already going to be long enough.

Someone mentioned to me that there's gang violence in Oxnard. True? Not true? Are there areas I definitely should avoid?

Even if there is no crime/gang violence in Oxnard, that's a long commute - forget it.

I think I've read a thread or two similar to yours and Sherman Oaks, Studio City, and Pasadena were mentioned. Most likely you'd be going against traffic. A lot depends on what you are looking for and what you can afford.
