The pic of Tampa & Victory is 1961 or later as that is a 61 Ford in the intersection. Shopping Bag was bought out by Von's in 1967.

So I guess that photo was no earlier than 1961. That definitely makes sense. My parents lived in an apartment near there, around Corbin and Victory and moved into the house I grew up in in early 1962. My dad took that photo and I scanned the Kodacolor slide with a Nikon slide scanner.

The smog was actually worse back then. In fact, it was choking. I used to walk home from kindergarten in Inglewood in the fifties, less than a mile, and by the time I got home it would hurt to breathe. The pic/pics you reference must have been taken on a Santa Ana wind day or right after a cleansing rain.

Wow, Hobo Kelly reference! Only an L.A native would remember her. Cartoon Hoooo!(not to mention your age!) How 'bout Knuckle head smith? I was born in 1960 and barely remember it.

loving this, but for those who are talking about the late 60s and 70s you have no idea what life was like in the 50s, L.A. style..

favorite hangout -Bob's drive in, doesn't matter which one.

Sat night: skating rink if you didn't have a date

Sunday church: white gloves Charlie, we went even further, gloves, hats and I remember I couldn't wear my favorite dress, why? OMG, it was a halter dress and showed my back..my wedding, strapless gown, you must be kidding. Eagle Rock high school graduation: we graduated in OXY bowl; guys white dinner jackets, gals, white formals, no skin could show so no strapless unless we wore a shall...

Senior Prom, held at the school, not some fancy hotel. If you were lucky maybe your date would take you for sandwhiches afterwards..

Once every month or so: Friday night sock hops, again in the school gym and with a real live 4 piece band.

Summer weekends: at least one day a trip to the beach to see how sun burned you could get: how can you get a tan if you don't get burned first and be sure to use the baby oil with iodine in it, that gives you a great color..

Gals: bleach those bangs. so cool..

Shop with mom and dad at Fedco;; great bargains.

Summer slumber parties, not for kids 6 or 8, but only when you were in high school and no guys allowed after 10pm

date curfew, usually midnight.

Special date: dinner in China town..

This was the mid 50s, by the late 50s things were changing.

Bought our first home in Covina, 1961, we paid $13,500 and it was huge, 1100sq ft, with 4 bedrooms and 11/2 baths. I think the master bedroom was 11x12 of something like that.

I guess I could go on and on, but you get the picture.

Nita

I loved the 1970s.

It was after the pill and before AIDS.

Anything goes.

My parents bought our first home in South Inglewood in 1952.... 8900 bucks. It's still there, as are both the homes they grew up in during the 20s, 30s and 40s.

Two blocks over from us, across Ballona Creek in Hawthorne, lived the Wilson family. (Wilson as in Beach Boys)
