I went to high school with Casey Wian, the son of Bob Wian, the guy who started Bobs.

You can see Casey on TV; He is a CNN Headline News reporter, specializing on business stories.

DA90027 is on a distinguished road
Yes the smog was the ONLY thing worse back then. I was born in 1961 and remember Hobo Kelley. The smog was really bad in the summer or on a hot day. California has chased most of the business out of CA that polluted the air, and cars run cleaner now. So do jets, those old 707s were noisy and used lots of gas. I did make an error about Shopping Bag. After doing some research I found out Vons merged with them around 1960-61 but kept them as Shopping Bags until 1966-67. The San Fernando Valley was pretty back then but so was everywhere else. I love the open spaces now these shopping areas are so crowded and they jam too many buildings into an area. Back then they had huge parking lots. This is a great pic, thanks so much for posting.

Great pics of what once was. my family moved here in 1971 and I thought I'd never want to leave. Now, there are just too many people and too much traffic everywhere, all the time. I just can't stay here much longer. I know I'll miss it when I leave, but the thing is, I already miss it anyway, because it's not what it used to be.

Regarding Shopping Bag, I'm sure I remember one in El Monte on Valley Blvd around 1972 or 1973, and the smog was worse. I remember days in the summer when our eyes would burn from it.

Boy I think we all remember those days. We lived in Arcadia in the early 70s and could hardly see the mountains in the summer..In fact in 1970 we moved to Altadena, before we moved to Arcadia and even that close we couldn't see them after about 10am...

Shopping Bag, they had several of them.

Does anyone remember "third stage smog alerts"? And everyone had to come in off the playground when they were called. You're right that the smog problem has really improved since then.

sure we do!!!! or certainly I do, yes, it has improved, more power to Calif..I may not want to move back to Calif but I give people credit who want to live there and I give the state credit for getting the problem under control.
