Default Look: Changes since the 1950s

The ladies aren't wearing their white gloves anymore.

Shot looking northwest from the corner of Tampa and Victory in the late 1950s. (Scanned from my dad's Kodachrome slide using a Nikon slide scanner.)

Check out the old (ding, ding, ding) gas pumps. "Sure, I'd like my windshield cleaned and the oil checked."

The Simi Hills are in the background - You can almost hear Rocketdyne's Santa Susana Field Lab test their Apollo moon rocket engines.
Yellow California license places.
Our dads worked at Lockheed, Hughes, and Rocketdyne. We went shopping at Zodys, White Front, Fedco, and the Big A.
Indian Guides; Gray-Y.
Brew 102.
Listening to Sheriff John while lacing up my PF Flyers.
Nike was Oat Mountain & Browns canyon.
The SFV area code was 213.
LAX was glamorous: "A stewardess in a miniskirt, a hippie in a leather shirt".
Hobo Kelly rode the RTDs.
It was Valley State, not CSUN.
The Green Sheet (Daily News).
Mayor Sam. Chief Ed.
Ten or so years later, we're hearing Jimi and Tull jamming at Devonshire Downs.
The Zoo at Farrells.

You know, that view has changed very little. Substitute Carl's Jr. for the gas station, and put classic plates on the cars, no?

I used to shop with my parents at Fedco and I was in Indian Guides. Remember how they would make the drum out of a coffee can? heh.

Cool pic. Yes, there's only a lack of light brown smaze (smog and haze) immediately after a rainfall now in the Valley. And there's been virtually no rain this last year, hence. . .!
Here's mine, except it's of Oliver Stone's recreation of 1965 Sunset Strip for his film "The Doors," in 1991. I took the photo at night for a magazine who wanted to see how the Whisky A Gogo had be set-dressed, since I thought a night shot of the actual production would be far more interesting. Photo (C) Fastfilm, yes, me.

A couple more color shots from the 1950s (both scanned from Kodachrome slides using a Nikon LS-2000 slide scanner).
It would interesting to see old, personally taken photos of the Southern California cityscape and landscape. In a different post I provided links to the LAPL and the CSUN historical photos searchable databases.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I grew up in part in Burbank in the early sixties. I also remember the old, scary original Jack in the Box guy. Creepy.

Wow, everything looked so clean and pretty back then. And the best thing was no celebrities!
