We may be moving to NC but also possibly LA. (depending on my mother's health)
I would probably be working in either Santa Monica or culver city area.
My husband has a sister and tons of friends in the hollywood hills, Loz Feliz, Silverlake, and Glendale.

Our main issue is we need a great public elementary school zone...we have a 3yo and a 1yo. Our HHI is about 180k
We love an area that has a lot to offer within walking distance, stores, restaurants.

Any thoughts?

Buying or renting makes a difference. Both areas are nice.

For walkability I would say both Santa Monica and Culver City are pretty good (Santa Monica being the better of the two).

Some other neighborhoods that are good for walkability (for So.Cal.) are: Los Feliz, Pasadena, So. Pasadena, Sierra Madre, South Bay cities (Manhattan Beach, Redondo Beach, etc), Studio City, and Sherman Oaks.

I am single so can't comment on schools; however, here is a list ranking top 50 cities in California (both northern and so cal) in terms of quality public schools.

Good luck.
