What sort of things do you like doing? One of my personal favorites to do with visitors is a trip downtown: visit Little Tokyo, walk down Broadway, go to Santee Alley, walk through the Toy District. Around Christmas it gets packed with people. It's not everyone's idea of a good time, though. It's bustling, fascinating, sometimes gritty (esp. in the Toy District) city living, but certainly blows the stereotype that LA has no street life out of the water. Lunch or a snack at Grand Central Market on Broadway is also fun; lots of excellent food stalls of all types.

Old Pasadena is nice, too, and they usually have a lot of activities going on in the days leading up to the big Tournament of Roses game/parade day; I don't know the schedule, but in years past there have been special events in addition to the general walking around/museums/restaurants/etc. You can also go see the Rose Bowl floats being decorated.

Other classic things to do include visits to Venice, Hollywood Boulevard, Griffith Park (including the observatory), etc.

old town pasadena is nice and you can get there on the gold line train after ice skating at the downtown LA ice rink. during the weekends they usually have a family friendly band playing on a stage that abuts the rink. good luck and have fun!

Huntington Gardens is one of my favorite places to visit.

The Huntington Library

Combine a visit to the very low key Ports of Call Village with a scenic drive around Palos Verde.

Ports O' Call Village (Marketplace), San Pedro, CA

I suggest the LA County Museum, the La Brea Tar Pits & the Page Museum.
