I'm curious about the rainy season I keep hearing about. People from the northeast say it's nothing compared to rain on the eastern side of the continent.

When is the rainy season? How often does it rain then, and how hard?

HAHAHAHAHA, that is a good one. It never rains. Sometimes there is precipitation that comes out of the clouds, but you can usually count the drops on the pavement. Seriously though, it does actually rain where you feel the need to turn on your windshield wipers, rarely. The local news will launch STORMWATCH 2XXX, hilarious. What is not so funny are the moronic drivers that have no notion of physics and there will be 180 crashes in one day instead of 20. A few years ago when we had the "100 year" flood rains, it still was nothing compared to back east on a normal year.

It does rain but not enough especially in SoCal. There are something like 20 days a year that it rains on average. Which is ridiculous & why even the coastal areas are practically a desert. It may rain heavily for a few days & we get total rainfall in a matter of 4 or 5 storms each winter. This winter should be a wet one because of El Nino.

Nothing about the West is like the East.

Rain is a feast or famine occurrence in So Cal.

2004/2005 season: 38.32"
2006/2007 season: 03.21"

See what I mean?

We can go 7 to 9 months between rainstorms.

So what months are this slightly-moist season? Are we in it now, or does it start later?

That's what it is so pathetic! A couple months! It's no wonder we are in near-constant drought!

I have to chuckle or laugh or do something silly! If you have ever lived in the Midwest or eastern part of the country you will find the "winter" and "rainy season" of California to be very benign.
I came here from Chicago one fine January day and could not understand why Californians were in hats, mufflers and coats!! The sun was shining and it was 60 degrees! When it did rain, it was very mild and it didn't last very long.

Why do you think everyone is clamoring to come to California? It is the weather! It sure ain't the taxes!

Average rainfall for LA City is just under 15" per year, making it semi arid.

Most of it comes from mid latitude systems, between November and April.

However, tropical systems and SW Monsoon do affect CA, especially the Southland, typically during the late summer. These are showery and may not occur every year.

One thing I've noticed is that most of that 15" average precip is in the form of short, sharp hard rain events. Whereas, in Nor Cal and certainly the Pac NW, you get more of the longer lasting, lighter rain type events.

I like the So Cal winter pattern. But need to be vigilant about flash floods in the usual places.

The times between the storms are splendid.
