Back to the original post..."LA people ....phony...."

People in LA/SoCal aren't too much different than those I am experiencing here in Colorado (I lived in LA from 1961 to 2006).

Times have changed.

Habits have changed.

Everyone is cell phoning someone while they're talking to you.
Everyone is chasing that last three minutes to get to work.
Everyone is cutting you off for the parking space.

At least half of Colorado people living here now are from out of state.

Yes, there are probably more people in LA that can afford boob jobs and face lifts and butt lifts and tummy tucks....

Yes, there are more brainwashed religious people here in the Springs...

Take your pick.

Hey there. I just moved to the LA area from Northern VA 3 weeks ago. I'm originally from LA but have been gone for about 9 years between college and living in DC. And to be honest, I've found LA to friendlier then DC. Sure, there are stuck up people (I work in Beverly Hills also) but its not any worse then the people who hang out in Georgetown or McLean. I just find the environment out here to be far less toxic then that of DC...maybe its the weather! But again, I grew up here so I might be biased!

You bring up some very good points here, Charles. Other areas have their own set of socially unkind behaviors, similar overall to a way of being nationally, maybe internationally. Also that there are different but similar drawbacks to people in various areas as a group.

I found in the Seattle/Portland NW a pretentiousness based on a lot of hypocrisy. For instance people are obsessed with money (usually other peoples') and working at the most cool hip places. Many act like intellectual, cultural snobs and at the same time they hate business, especially big business and vote along the lines as a bunch of socialists. There is a strong contigency that are radical way left wingers who are really east coast rich kids rebelling against their rich east coast parents. Don't even get me started on race and hypocrisy in the NW! It is a place of great hypocrisy on so many levels it is disgusting. Many of the middle age rich are very liberal socially in their voting yet they would never go to a neighborhood, especially with their children, because it is too gay! HAHA.

Intellectualism is god in the NW and so is Environmentalism. Watch out if you believe in a God otherwise then those things, because you will be labelled as less then intellectually and a raper of the earth--no facts of course on their side to back this up. It is just that you do not prescribe to their beliefs, thus you must be harming what is so very valuable to them because they really can't handle diversity of thought and economics and religion up there. Facts and reality or new points of view don't really work with these folks. Churches up there are generally used to support the two other religions mentioned above unfortuanately. (Thank God this is not true in the eastern side of the state and some of the outlying areas close the the ocean.) Quite honestly I am a little suprised people with money from California have not spoken about this prejudice against people who have money and show it. This is unacceptable beavior in the Seattle and Portland. You can have money, but do NOT show it! Maybe the amount of people moving there overshadowed this on a public level, but it is still prevalent in the old timers. The Californians probably sense this a little, but don't really know what it is, because it is not in a Californian's DNA to deny the better things in life, in fact it is something to aspire to here. Yet, I bet more then a few started unconsciously toning down their purchases that will be seen externally for something a little less showy! This also pertains to dress by the way--understated--or be judged! Notice how grudge is god though fashion wise--UGH!

Montana is beautiful and seemingly real, but watch out for everyone knowing your business and in constant judgement of your lifestyle, no matter how you live. Can you say, BOUNDARIES!? And watch out in Montana if you own something other then a middle-class item. They will judge you as rich and snobby for no damn good reason then that is how they have always reacted to people that have anything above the norm. I'll take 'phony and pretentious' with freedom to live and enjoy the sun anyday thank you very much. Give a good group of people ignoring me because they are trying so hard to be a poser and I point out a place where people are too self obsessed to get into my business or to even care enough to pay me any mind.

Phony and pretentious, sure, but also along with that are people who can be real, kind and there are benefits to living around the self obsessed. No one cares who you are or what you do and if they judge you they are too busy with their own facade to give you a second thought, you disapear in their own mirror. Many Californians are focused on their journey too much to give you any mind.

Money, things, and looks are god in California sure, but also God is God too and I like that.

(I can't wait for the flames from WA, OR, and Montana . . . maybe even a few Californians )

la natives arent really phony, im one and i have some real, down to earth, hard working friends. but if you stay on the west side or in the "trendy" places you will encounter phonies. i party all over LA and alot of the phonies that ive encountered are transplants wanting to fit the "LA life style". granted some natives also aspire to be like the stars, but for the most part people i know and surround myself are not like that. thats just as stereotype that people drag on and on and on. its like lookn at a postcard with palm trees and g-string hotties and thinking la is just like that. its not. la people transpalnts and natives are edgy and daring so just be careful who you associate with.
