Obviously, there are quite a few sour grapes in this thread. Many of you hate people like me -- people who own two Porsches, a Modena, a BMW M5, a Bell 206, a 5 bedroom estate, who are more handsome than Brad Pitt, and who make almost seven figures a year. Don't be jealous simply because I'm superior to most of you. In fact, watch it, or I'll use my vast sums of money and good looks against you in some sort of devious manner.

James,

If you truly are financially very well off and not just making light, there is nothing saying that by default you are phony or pretentious (well, except for the tone of your post, unless it was meant to be tongue-in-cheek completely).

I have met some seriously pretentious people who make $30K a year and are killing themselves to afford a leased Lexus to keep up appearances. WAY more than people I know making six figures or more. I grew up wealthy (mid seven figures 25 years ago), and I remember that the stresses of life were still there, you just had nicer surroundings and nicer things around you. So if a person is real with themselves it need not be the deciding factor.

Do I think that people of average or lesser means are often jealous? Sure. Do I think that people of greater means fall into the trap of objectivism? You betcha.

But the OP was asking if LA is seriously phony and pretentious. I would say that compared to MOST of the USA outside of major metro areas, it is, yes. But you can find just as many phony people in a midwest town of 200K people, they just have to work harder at it.

You guys . . . pure and totally cool. Just tryin' to keep it real in the pretentious and phony thread. Who ever started this one anyway? I'm too lazy to go back. LOL.

Yeah, that devious manner thing. Forgot about that ... sounds pretty dang kinky to Mistress Twinkle!

That whole Brad Pitt thing - well, most guys are better looking than Brad Pitt anyway.
