Default Are people in LA really phony and pretentious?

Not everyone of course, but do you get that vibe? I am thinking of moving there from the Northern VA area and I can't imagine people could be any more materialistic and a-holes than they are here. I have lived in San Diego before and I felt people there were so nice and way more down to earth than the DC area. Is LA different?

I have lived in LA most of my life, and yes, people here are incredibly pretentious and rude. I'm glad I'm not the only one who notices it. There are so many posers walking around in new clothes and driving brand new cars, but don't have a dime in their pockets. I notice it a lot in Beverly Hills. Some people have their noses so high in the air, it's a wonder they don't bump into something. I think it has something to do with the entertainment industry. Everybody wants to look famous and important like the celebrities. It's pretty ridiculous.

Yep, there were much nicer people here 20-30 years ago. What happened?
My guess is overpopulation and you know what that gets, put too many rats in a small cage and they start eating each other. Too much stress. So don't blame it on the natives. We once were a well mannored bunch until the LA invasion came.

Filmcutter,

I don't think they have their noses in the air so much as their face in their cell phones! I can't go anywhere in Beverly Hills without listening to people's inane cell phone conversations. It's maddening!

The only "real" people I met is from Long Beach and Compton. The other people I met in other areas, I thought were really friendly but they know how to play it.

True!

Just be yourself, and other people "being themselves" will appear. If you get caught up in the race, then a part of the race you are...

Yeah, but you're married (or so your profile says), so to a single guy like me, you're almost invisible.

Just kidding!!!
