I smoke marijuana and find it convenient that it can be purchased just about anywhere in LA. But now that there are more marijuana dispensaries than Starbuck's and McDonalds combined, I wonder if the marijuana culture is getting out of control. The city council doesn't seem to have any idea how to slow down the number of pot dispensaries and the city attorney claims LA is being too permissive and not even following California law.

Anyone have an opinion?

If you think it is getting "out of control", then the logical solution would be to begin the process of bringing it "under control" by controlling demand such as your own marijuana use or stopping your use of it altogether...yes?

It is illegal to use marijuana so maybe the right thing to do is put these guys out of business. The entire medical marijuana thing is a crock. They figure that LA has between 500 and 900 dispensaries. Why not make them sell it only at Pharmacies and only with a valid Prescription. A real doctor gives out a real presription and it can be taken to a real Pharmacy. I bet the number of places drops then.

Techically, they sell THC in pill form(marinol), but to many with prescriptions that I've talked to the point of marijuana is the smoking and the getting high doing it rather than just having the ingredient assuage your symptoms(be it chronic pain, reaction from chemo, whatever). It's a bit of hypocrisy, and not everyone is like that, but I see a problem with the state going against federal law when another option exists that can be legally prescribed.

I don't understand why marijuana dispensaries need to be controlled anymore than the number of Walgreens and Starbucks that proliferate in the city. Let the free market roar!

I'm guessing you don't live in a neighborhood where the dispensaries get robbed and lead a chase through a residential neighborhood or a security guard gets shot out in front.

I have no idea where to get marijuana and I live and work around LA.
That said, I don't have a need or marijuana, nor have friends that are into that.
So maybe my social circle is not one who uses the stuff, thus not affected by your perceived out of control.

This is the only business growing (pun intended) in CA and people actually want to shut in down?

I say, let them continue to rent empty buildings and provide safe access for people that want it.

If there's a problem, it should be addressed. I don't think all dispensaries should be shut down because of the problems caused by a few.

within a mile or so of my apartment there must be a dozer or two dispensaries that have all popped up fairly recently. i haven't noticed anything really change besides all the new green cross neon signs. i see no issues with the proliferation of these shops as i'm pro weed even though i personally don't smoke.
