I just moved to CA and my son was here. I wanted to get a small place for myself, but he insisted that we could get along in the same apt. No, we cannot get along! I have to leave. My son will not agree to come off of the lease. I will still be held responsible for the rent. I have stellar credit, and I do not need a credit problem. Does the CA courts deal with these problems?

Denise

If you signed on the lease, you're responsible. Whatever issues you have with your son is not the landlord's problem.

I am not a lawyer, but I think, if he is on the lease, you are both resposible. I don't think there is anything you can do about it right now..

If you are leaving, why don't you just pay to break the lease and let him find somewhere else to stay? If he is grown which I suspect he is, let him figure out what to do. Don't let him ruin your good credit score. I'm in my 30s and I can't live with my parents either!!! Best of luck to you.

I suggest several simultaneous ads on craigslist or other sites for son compatible people to sublet from you or work out a roommate arrangement with him. After getting over his first reaction to rejection your son might even want to get involved in this process so that he will not end up with the roommate from hell.

There are many speculating on room prices in LA, so if you ask for the actual 1/2 of the rent you might be able to find candidates quickly. Be persistent.

Meanwhile a temporary cease-fire with your son is a good idea, it would be a pity to ruin your holidays and start a family feud over a silly lease. LA teaches most people a few good lessons, doesn't it?!

Remember to take nice walks on the beach and keep your spirits up.
Good luck, Denise, it will be alright!
