So, I shared an apartment with 2 roommates, but I moved out a little over a year ago. The utilities were in my name and I left it like that when I moved out. The 2 guys have always been good with money and continue to pay the utilities on time. But the problem is that they just got busted for selling and growing marijuana in this apartment. I have only had casual conversations with them over the last year and have never been back to my old apartment. My question is am I legally liable for the criminal activities that happened in that place because my name was still on the utility bills?

I am sure your not, but you may want to first get your name off the utilities and talk to the service providor to make sure you are in the clear.

Why would you leave anything in your name after moving out? Luckily for you, I'm pretty sure that one thing has nothing to do with the other but now would be a good time to get those accounts closed as your old friends will probably not be paying them anymore.

Next time you move, take EVERYTHING of yours with you. That includes utilities.

I don't think you're criminally liable for anything but you ought to be locked up for moving out and leaving anything in your name. You're asking for a world of easily avoided hurt.

I am no expert but in the unlikely event they even find out the utilities are in your name, they might ask you why as it does seem strange. You might want to make sure you can establish residency elsewhere because if I were the police, I would assume you lived there too.
