Hi everyone,
It looks like I may have the opportunity to move from Michigan to the L.A. area in the next couple of months, so I'm doing some initial research on housing and I'm having some trouble deciding what city would be the best fit.
My job would be in Thousand Oaks, but our office has a strong "work from home" policy because of the traffic so odds are I won't be in the office more than a day or two a week.
I looove the T.O./Calabasas/Topanga Canyon area because of the lush green feel and proximity to mountains/beaches/recreation, but a few people have cautioned me against it saying that there really aren't a lot of people my age in the area and I'd get bored quickly. Is there an area that would be more suited for a young professional in late 20s that has the same beautiful green lush look and outdoor amenities that Calabasas/T.O. have?
Looking to rent. 1-2 bedroom, less than $2k/month. My boyfriend will be joining me in 8 months or so... but before then, I'll be on my own so I'd love to live in an area where I can meet people and be close to great shopping, restaurants, nightlife, etc.
Thanks for your help!

santa monica or studio city would be good options with not so bad commutes on the days you do have to go into the office. the nightlife opportunities are growing in TO, but i think you'll be happier in the city.

Would you get bored quickly? Would you be happier in the city? Do the people who tell you that know you well? If so, listen. (When I was a young professional, I would have prefered lush green over city - definitely.)

But if not, . . . do you want to make a decision on where to live based on your age? If you love (even looove) the feel and location of an area, why not try it? You're renting; you can choose a new place when your boyfriend comes. Really, the Los Angeles area doesn't have places so remote that you won't meet people. The place is packed.

Check out the areas that originally interested you. See if there are restaurants and shopping nearby.

You can use meetup.com to meet people with similar interests.

Thanks for the suggestions! Honestly, lush and green is more important to me than city (I live in a city in suburban Detroit that's known for being the hub of nightlife and shopping and it gets old quick)...but I'm nervous about ending up somewhere where I'm the only single young professional in a 10 mile radius. Sounds like that won't be an issue though The people who've told me to avoid TO/Calabasas know the area better than they know me....so you make a good point.
Not knowing the area well... I was just wondering if there's a place that's a good combo of both (outdoor rec and shopping/nightlife). The only places I've visited so far are the Newport/Laguna area (not for me at all...), downtown (for sure no) and T.O./Malibu/Topanga Canyon (which I really liked).
Thanks

How much shopping and eating meals in restaurants do you really do? (The number of pairs of shoes you own would be a good metric.)
