House hunting in the Santa Clarita area with 3 kids (11, 8, 6). We are looking to get into the best elementary schools that feed into the best middle and high schools. We'd love to get some suggestions of neighborhoods or other issues we should consider.

Here is a start

School Performance Maps

Here are many tools I've put together for househunters (more focus on Orange County but still good stuff here):

On a side note be aware that some areas have too many kids and they end up sending the elementary kids to the city next door. So even if you think you are within the boundaries of a specific school, your kids might not get in all the time. Check with the district and the school before you make your move.

Anywhere in Valencia is a good bet, plus Stevenson Ranch. The nice thing about this area is that it caters to kids, so no matter where you live or go to school, there are all sorts of things to get them involved. If they are into baseball, there is the Wm. S. Hart baseball and softball league. It's a great way to meet people from all over the community that your kids might not go to school with.

I second SoCalAngel2009's comments, Valencia or Stevenson Ranch are great parts of the SCV to raise kids. Lots to keep the busy and out of trouble.

Rio Norte middle is excellent, as is Valencia High. It's hard to find a "bad school" in the area, but I second 00molavi's comments.

Stevenson Ranch and the west ranch communities in general (essentially anything west of the 5 fwy) bear a significant premium to the rest of SCV. Note that Emblem Elementary and Bouquet Canyon Elementary are closing, West Creek Elementary is brand new and opens in the fall.

We purchased a home in the West Hills / West Creek area because it has the new school, sits adjacent to Rio Norte (API's in the 900s, which is almost unheard of in middle school), and is close to Valencia High. You'll find Valencia, which has tons of great tracts - just about anything for your preference - is the "Goldilocks" of the area in many ways... not too much, not too little, just right.

Good luck - I'm not a realtor but glad to provide any other insight if you need it.

Stay away from Canyon Country. Valencia is the best. Home prices are a lot cheaper in Canyon Country, and there is a reason for that!

West Creek Academy, as West Creek Elementary is now called, will integrate music and foreign language into the curriculum.

It is public and opens this fall. West Creek and West Hills residents get guaranteed admission, all others are selected via lottery.

Here's more info on the school:
