So what's the solution? The police seem unable to do much. Should we hire vigilantes? Bring in the Guardian Angels? Arm the neighborhood watch?

We don't have snow or heavy rains or humid heat here so buildings and streets are easier to preserve even when they are negelected. But I have worked in the alleys behind those streets and I can tell you that what you don't see in the streets is in those alleys. Graffitti, trash, homeless people, drug paraphernalia, dead animals, stray dogs wondering around, you name it.

There's also the pitbulls in the front and back yards. I'm talking mean pitbulls that have been trained to fight. It looks nice during the day but that's because everyone that is usually out at night with trouble in mind and causing a ruccus is asleep during the day.

lol i hear what you saying . but them picture they show on here of the east coast ghettos dont really look dangerous to me im use to seeing alot of people on the streets crack heads pushing baskets in ghetto birds flying over everywhere .. all i see on them east coast ghettos is a couple abadoned buildings with graffiti that doesnt look ghetto to me i see that in down town L.A with crack heads living in it lol so since there aint no gang bangers in crack heads out pushing baskets in them east coast ghettos to me in aint a real ghetto

Advice about a place from someone who has never been there.... does that sound familiar? In case it doesn't, that's one of your biggest complaints about LA/SD/So Cal bashers, and here you are doing just that.

For what it's worth, I've been to Compton countless times, and I'm still here to talk about it, with no penetrating wounds or beat down marks. I need to satisfy my Bludso's, Mom's Burgers and Honey's jones on a fairly regular basis.

P.S. I'm extremely white.

There's a reason for that. It's a gang paradise, with lots of black and latino gangs running drug trade all over the streets and getting into turf wars. Not to mention that MS13 has a presence in the city.
man i gotta inform you and im serious. MS13 is all hype. just another violent LA-based latino gang. 18th Street, Avenues and Florencia 13 probably got a higher body count and more agressive. only reason why MS13 seem so bad is cus they invadin all over america (unlike previously listed gangs) and they on national geographic. for real.

ps - florencia 13 goes hunting for blacks in south central on the eastside. no joke.

this forum ain't about solutions. compton has been bad for about forty years. it's cleanin up it's appearance and economy and violent crime has dropped drastically. it'll stay a bad hood (not all areas of compton) for a long time tho cus of poverty and those who habitually engage in crime and gangs and call compton home.

Compton isn't so much a ghetto as it is gang infested and just plain dangerous. Walking or driving around Compton at night is not a good idea unless you are black. It's not like its run down and nasty, just dangerous as hell. If you want to see true ghetto, go to Camden, New Jersey...just outside Philly. That's more dangerous than Compton AND ghetto as poo. I think East LA is actually worse than Compton, and even some parts of San Pedro are too.
