Know about it and encountered vocal members of this group. Like the earlier poster said, it is mainly something collage kids attach themselves to. I never took it seriously and their arguments (as well as the way they argue) are ridiculous and weak.

Atzlan, La Raza, MECHa, Reconquistas, etc, all should take a basic history course. At the height of its power the Aztec Empires northern boundary ended far to the south of what is today the USA. Just what claim Mestizos from southern Mexico and Central America have to the American Southwest is puzzling. This said, however, these movements should not be taken lightly, as there are a large number of extremeists in them, and in the event of civil unrest or an actual insurrection, they could carry out widespread damage. In the unlikely event of such an uprising actually occuring, there are those on the other side that are very well armed and would respond with widespread deadly force. One of the false perceptions of the Atzlan crowd is that Anglos are all soft and cannot or would not fight them. If they actually were so foolish as to resort to violence, this mistaken belief could cost them their lives. In the meantime, let them make speeches, write papers, go on marches, and waste their time and energy on what is a useless cause.

im born and bred in LA and this reconquista stuff is a phantom. the media, and racist (white supremacists/ storm front) groups make it out to be a big deal when in fact it isnt. its a bunch of hooey. its something that college kids beleive, but then forget about. as angelinos, we dont worry about that.

There is no such thing as an "Aztlan Movement".

The theory you are are referring to is actually claimed by far right wingers who call it "Reconquista", or the reconquering of the Southwest by evil Mexicans.

Aztlan was a term that came into popularity among Chicanos(Americans of Mexican descent) in the 1960s. Remembers, this was the 60s, when America was going through major changes. A lot of radical politics as well as ethnic nationalism. It was a different America back then, much less tolerant of it's racial minorities and cultures. The theory of Aztlan was in reaction to this social atmosphere.

Even at the height of its popularity among Chicanos in the 60s, 70s, early 80s, the Aztlan theory was more about identity than anything, never an actual movement or plan.

Aztlan is a term used to describe the mythical land that included the American southwest. The theory was so that Chicanos wouldn't feel alienated in the WASP culture, the theory said they were already home, and they shouldn't me made to feel like outsiders. This was their home, the theory said.

Today, with a lot of anti-immigrant sentiment, leading to a lot of anti-Mexican sentiment, the old radical theory has been used by the far right wingers to stir fear.

They claim that Mexicans(and Americans of Mexican descent) are all in cahoots with a plan to retake the Southwest. Based on this theory, that was more about identity than anything, they spread this idea that there is a literal movement going on to retake America.

In reality, the theory has never been more than a point of identity. Never been an actual "movement". It's not nearly as popular among Chicanos as it was in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. And the vast majority of illegal immigrants have never heard of the term, or the myth behind it.

The only people who believe it are anti-Mexican immigrants, far right wingers, and a few out of touch Chicano professors/students with their minds stuck in 60s politics. Don't believe the hype. It's just fearmongering.

Hispanics don't generally think in terms of "reconquering" the Southwest, but they do widely support mass immigration from Latin America. Like all ethnic and racial groups, Hispanics give their support to their own people and pursue their own interests. The effect of this has been rapid Latin Americanization (esp Mexicanization) of the region. This hasn't been a violent conquest but a slow takeover through illegal and chain immigration and high birthrates.

This Latin Americanization is highly evident in new especially Latino celebrities like Eva Longoria, George Lopez, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Mario Lopez, and the millions of Hispanic-Americans like them! Doesn't even feel American! Complete Latin Americanization.

After all the effort they put into trying to get OUT OF Mexico and INTO this country, very few sane Mexican-Americans would try to reunite southwestern states with Mexico again. It's like saying that there's a movement that wants to make Miami-Dade County a province of Cuba. There's a better chance of Baja becoming the 51st state.
