I'm sort of biased, as I spent part of my childhood there and still love the area.

90603 is one of the zip codes of Whittier and its most middle-of-the-road down-to-earth yet charming place in the city. You should be safe there.
If you can buy north of Whittier Blvd. that would be even better but you should be generally safe throughout the area.

The only downer is that the stretch of Whittier Blvd. going through this section of Whittier has had a lot of commercial closures (namely, the car dealerships and some of the shops) so it looks a little deserted, but I haven't noticed much graffiti nor any mischief travelling through there at night so I think it is fine.

As for school scores, check with McCormack's or some website that specializes in that. The city also has its own website with police information.
