I normally avoid the 5 in south LA county. I was on it Sunday early afternoon and it crawled along. With three lanes in each direction and this being the main artery between LA and OC, how have they let this narrow freeway go on like this for so long? It looks as though they are beginning to widen it but it's crammed in between buildings and side streets. Are they planning on taking the buildings out?

Are there other good alternatives I'm just not seeing? I know I could zig-zag around this, using 405-605-91-710-60 to get between the two. Do people commute on this to DTLA? I know it's one of the oldest freeways in California and used to be the 101 before they did the interstate system, but has it always been this bad and congested?

It was pretty much obsolete when it was originally completed.

I'm pretty sure they are working on plans to expand it right now.

Well, that bit is kind of out of space, but it's also the worst outside of the El Toro Y and East LA Interchange, and probably the worst stretch of freeway anywhere in LA on the weekend. Double decker won't work out because there is a lot of residential and the freeway is basically at grade with no sound walls at all through most of that area.

Whenever I'm stuck on that freeway, right before it opens up in Orange County, it always bothers me that our Powers That Be couldn't figure out how to widen that section twenty or even thirty years ago! Talk about a bottleneck.
