Hi Everyone,

I’m new to this board and also new to Los Angeles. I just moved from Seattle a month ago. While searching on the net for more information about LA areas, I found this web board, which I think is very helpful. I’m looking for a rental property for my family and would like to have pieces of your advice. Here are my conditions:

- There are 3 people in our family (me, my wife, and a baby that will be born in just a month). So, we’re looking for an apartment or a house having 3 bedrooms as some of our family members will come visit us often after the baby is born.

- My wife’s office is in Oakwood area (Melrose Ave. and North Western Ave.) in LA, whereas my office is in Huntington Beach, which is almost 40 miles from LA. The daily commute between LA and Huntington Beach would be a problem. We are, then, looking for a place to rent in between. We may want to split the commuting distance say 10/30 miles with a distance of 10 miles going towards LA as I think that driving to LA during rush hours would take as much time as driving to Huntington Beach. Does it make sense?

- That said, I think there are a few areas meeting our conditions; i.e., Culver City, Marina Del Ray, and Inglewood. I picked these areas as I think that driving on I-405 may be the fastest compared to other freeways. What would you think? Or, there may be some other areas that better meet the conditions? We definitely want to live in a safe area as well.

- Our budget is about $3000/mo. It would be even better if those apartments or houses can “bundle” utilities (water, gas, electricity, cable TV and internet, etc.) into the rent. I know it’s pretty hard to find such a deal, but the apartment where we live now does that for us. This, however, is not too big a deal or a deal breaker if the utilities cannot be included. Our bottom line is to find a safe, convenient, and good place to live between LA and Huntington Beach to raise our kid.

Thank you very much for all suggestions you could give. I appreciate it.

I'm unfamiliar with the Oakwood area, but you may consider Torrance.

It's in between the Wilshire CC and the 101. Beautiful area with nice old homes.
