I watched "The Shield" religiously when it was on FX. I always wondered how close of an interpretation the tv show was to the actual crime that goes on in LA. Obviously certain things are blown out of proportion because it's a tv show. But I'm just wondering for those of you who know the tv show and are familiar with the crime in LA. Any comparisons?

Never saw the show....so can't comment on that.

But crime is at 40 year lows and has been falling for the past 15 years. Television is NEVER close to reality, not even "reality shows" are real.

Are there areas that cops won't even go into?

LAPD go wherever they want! A former gang member who was working as a community counselor was killed by gang members last week so there are most definitely dangerous neighborhoods. I've never seen The Shield but most tv programs tend to exaggerate [otherwise they would be boring].

No one knows why but crime continues to fall in LA. My parents remember when there were serial killers walking around LA [like the Night Stalker]. People were afraid to go outside at night but the Night Stalker broke into houses and raped & killed people for the hell of it. Richard Ramirez was a satanist & is still in prison even though he was suppose to get the death penalty.

I think Los Angeles has had some famous murderers. Maybe someone can start a thread on these killers. Did anyone live in LA when the Night Stalker or the Zodiac killer or Hillside strangers were around?

LA is one of the safest big metro areas in the country. Honestly, I feel like crime is more of a concern (and more random) here in the Bay Area than it is down in LA.

Vic Mackey's strike team from "The Shield" was based on the exploits of the now defunct CRASH unit of the LAPD's Rampart district station, many of whose officers were convicted of bribery, extortion and even murder.

I think a great deal of crime never gets reported and/or never comes to public knowledge. TV news just re-broadcasts the same accounts over and over until something new happens then the cycle repeats.
Take a look at some of the maps. It also seems like people are being burgled even when someone's home more and more.
