That's the thing though...there will always be people trying to become a famous actor. I just feel like it's unfair to get his hopes up and have him move here to find out that he's a dime a dozen. If I was him, I'd want people to be honest with me.
Negative Nellie You need to watch the movie the Tooth Fairy, with Dwayne Johnson in it
Wow, you know there are worse things to do in life than try to follow your dreams.
Working as a waiter or waitress, while taking acting classes isn't the end of the earth.
That's called living life. Maybe you should write a bulletin to all the little kids who aspire to be football pros to give up now while they are 8, since the percentage of making it in the pro's is less than 1%
And all the musicians, geeze you better get your keyboard warmed up there, cause there are so many little kids practicing to be the next American Idol. you will ahve a lot of pre-rejection letters to write, to let them down now. Face it kid, you are gonna be a clerk at Target
Of course, while he is in LA, he might meet someone who gives him a good connection in something else, like an art job, that he does in the mean time.
and that may be his final calling, and he also might meet the person of his dreams here.
or he could stay in Podunk Wherever, and be a shoe salesman.
That would be totally safe and not risk him getting his (hopes UP)
Sounds like someone has been bitterly burned.
let me tell you MY foray into acting.
I started as an extra. I got a job as an extra in a movie Chevy Chase was starring in. They asked if anyone wanted to join SAG that day (which meant you get a speaking part)
Of course everyone raised their hands.
They picked about 10 girls, It was lucky I will admit.
I got my speaking role, I got my sag card. I got head shots a week later, sent them out to several agents.
I got a crappy agent. (you got to start somewhere)
I ended up not pursuing acting because I do not have the emotional make up to withstand the rejection in the industry. I was also 19 or 20. and immature.
I had to go to a lot of casting parties, as mandated by my agent. To get exposed.
It is possible. You have to push you have to work you ass off.
But it is possible. AND you have to have something special, either a good look, a character look, or a connection.
It also helps tremendously if you have any special skills, like martial arts, fighting, surfing, skiing, anything, that a casting director will say I need an actor who can do (blank)
the more you can do, the better chance you have. So start learning a lot of stuff. If anything to put it on your resume. From rollerblading to singing. to playing the piano or guitar.
And learn to carry a tray of food.
and if you are from somewhere, learn to drop your accent on command.
It is a rough calling, but it is also an adventure, and if you don't try, will you look back in 30 years and say I wonder if I could have? Of course you will.
Don't listen to negative Nellie. People will try to shoot you down at every turn. There is your first example, turn a deaf ear, say thanks for the advice and move ON.
You would be best off in the San Fernando Valley as was suggested, they cater to actors, Encino, Studio City, Woodland Hills, look in that area, you can get a single or bachelor apt for 1000 easy.
Although, renting a room is a good suggestion too. cuts back on all your expenses.

No, I haven't been burned at all. I'm just not an optimist. I'm a realist. He said he's fine not making it big, he just enjoys acting. That's great. I support that, but for the thousands upon thousands of people who come here to become famous they are kidding themselves. Sure follow your dreams, but they need to be realistic. If you can't sing but want to be a singer because it's your DREAM, well, you need a dose of reality. Just like all the people who try out for American Idol who are awful. You would tell them to follow their dreams when they don't stand a chance? I think that's ridiculous. I guess I'm like Simon. Also, I never said they have to work at Target or be a shoe salesman. Actually, if they tried to follow their dreams (like you are supporting) and they fail, they will end up working there. I would hope that people will go to college (or trade school, etc) and have a backup plan!
People don't actually need to move to LA to be an actor. What acting have you done or been involved with where you currently live? Have you worked with any regional theater groups or anything like that where people know you?

The good point about this is, people can use local theater to have fun with acting while maintaining a traditional day job. Moorpark Melodrama is (was?) one example. You'll probably never be a big start, but if acting is your goal (as opposed to becoming rich and famous), then local theater is a great opportunity.
I dont care if i make it big or not, i enjoy acting and want to move to california. if i make it then great, if not then no big deal.
I don't know, normally I'd think "Oh my GOD, please don't come out here and have your hopes dashed" except for the statement above. Since you're not hanging your every dream upon becoming a star, but seem to just want to come out here regardless, I'd say, do it! Now's the time, while you're single, etc. This statement just seems to say to me that you'd like it out here regardless, so why not?
Of course, be warned that unemployment is an issue. I don't know whether VA would be able to help you with that or not. I'm not sure how the system works.
But if you have an attitude of, "I'll try this...but no matter what, I'll stay," I'd say that's a more positive attitude and warrants thinking seriously about.
I'm one of the many who have been struck by the acting bug, and want to move to Los Angeles. I am looking for a safe area where I wont get mugged, shot, stabbed or killed or have my vehicle messed with. I am also looking for an apartment, I don't care what size how big or small for under 1000 a month. I do not mind commuting up to an hour each direction to the main city.
i too am leaving the secure field of nursing and pursuing an acting career- where as my friends and family think im nuts- but im happier being nuts i guess- maybe we can at least support each other with our life changing decision
I have spent the last 2 years taking care of patients under 50 years old on ventilators- this was my wake up call to do what i want to do- go for your dream- a successful career is only the icing on the cake - the challenges in between is what builds character and a goal of hope to get up in the morning( what ever your morning time is) be good to yourself and others and it will come back to you- will be moving to Los angeles and looking for a support system since i am moving from minnesota - my email is snowflakegrissman@yahoo.com - oh and my name is kathleen
