Is it possible to get lower rates by just showing up that night instead of booking in advance online?

I've driven to Vegas from LA on a whim and got a hotel room at the travelodge on the strip for $50 a night

Yes; we used to do it all the time. The only time we made reservations is during a Holiday. If we were planning on going during a Holiday; we called a couple month's prior.

Sometimes we did. There were even times we made a reservation and when we got there we were able to get them cheaper. Just be really respectful and nice with the clerks. Laugh and cut up with them. And remember that cheaper rates are during the week. Weekends are sometimes double the regular rate.
And ask what discounts they offer. AAA, Government, State etc. There are so many discounts that a lot of people don't know about.
What you could do is call several of them and ask them if they give discounts if the reservation was made online or if you just show up. They will give you the inside scoop on how they do things. Hope this helps. I miss Vegas. We've been gone for 2 years! I envy you!

It depends on the hotel because some have more leeway with regard to nightly rates. Keep this in mind. They want to fill as many rooms as possible each and every night.

So, showing up in the evening might go in your favor. Hell man i wouldn't be afraid to haggle a bit as well.

Although, some hotels do have online promotions, and it might be to your benefit as well.

I'd say research vegas peak months, days, etc to gauge what you may or may not be able to get away with....

Did it many times years ago. Yes, you can always give it a shot. The hardest part is trying for the great rates on Thur thru Sat..

Depends on the hotel and how many conventions/events there are in town that week. I was snowed in to Vegas on a Sunday night one night and there were no hotel rooms available because it was a busy week convention wise, so I got stuck paying a ton of money at an offstrip extended stay for one night because they were the only place with rooms available.

Why is this in the LA section? Or even CA section?

My guess is the OP wants to get the answer from LA residents who head to Vegas at the last moment.
