If you are Black, the answer is no.

It seems everyone here is unaware of the ethnic cleansing that is taking place in East L.A., as Mexican gangs have been attacking and killing black civilians, trying to rid their neighborhoods of blacks.

The third-to-last paragraph in this article proves that what I'm saying is true.

I am not an expert on gangs but my experience has been that they only mess with you if you are some sort of threat to them. However if you have something they want. Just really depends on what area you live in.

If your life is not around them and you don't necessarily live next door to a drug dealing gang member then I would say you have nothing to worry about.

Ah. That's not why you started this thread and asked what you asked.

They survive because they are not victims of crime?

Crime = death, no death = no crime.

Trying to understand your reasoning.

No.

I would suggest you check out crime data about ELA on a site called city-data.com but if you try to use your browser to find the word "crime" on this page:
http://www.city-data.com/city/East-Los-Angeles-California.html
..you might see that "crime" is not displayed at all.

However, if you use your browser to find the word "crime" on the below page:
http://www.city-data.com/city/San-Jose-California.html
..it's plain to see.

Hmmm...

This is a coherent post.

Or they'll just give the white guys a beating and take their alcohol and MJ.

The drummer from No Doubt - Adrian used there also i think. Adrian is white.

So IMO, Maybe if youre of latin descent, speak spanish and hopefully not Afro-American, you might fare better

Interesting, though you don't tell us that you went to ELA after dark while not in your work clothes and chatting with the Chicas.

Think for yourself all you like but being given warnings and never taking any of it seriously can be really foolish unless you genuinely like getting into fist fights or perhaps just getting beaten up by a group of other guys.

As a black person who knows little Spanish, no. East Los would probably be the last place I would ever consider going.

Next time you should actually READ the article. The article is talking about GANGS in NORTHEAST Los Angeles (Highland Park etc). NOT EAST LA.

One black guy that grew up in East LA might disagree that East LA is a toxic or hostile environment for blacks. His goes by the stage name Will I Am (of the Black Eyed Peas). His life seems to going just fine and growing up in East LA didn't ruin his life.

As a white (non-hispanic) guy who knows some Spanish, I have NEVER had any problems in East LA. Or Watts or Compton or Baldwin Hills for that matter.

I don't think your problem is that you are black....it's the social outcast thing that is alienating you.

I am not saying racism doesn't exist....but the attitude you carry in your head is far more important than anything external.

I think you understood it just fine.

The question titling this thread is: "Is it possible to not be Hispanic or Latino and live in East L.A.?".

4% of East LA residents were not Hispanic/Latino. So apparently, yes, it is possible for non-Hispanic/Latino folks to live in East LA. If the number was 0%, there could be more of a debate.

Really if you have dark hair and tan complexion you could easily blend in like me, but if you look like Carrot Top then there might be a problem. You don't see too many disturbingly bulked up gingers down there
