Within the next year, I am going to be looking to move to LA. I have read through quite a few of the apartment threads on here and I am kind of confused. I have been doing a ton of research on LA, studying maps, the freeway system, public trans, and everything else. The part that I am wondering about is apartment rentals. My budget to rent an apartment would be in the area of 1000.00 to 1200.00 at most and I would like to stay in the westside. From all the threads I have read, everyone says that with that price range, you will find only a crummy apartment. I have checked craigslist (don't know if its reputable in LA) and some other rental sites, and it seems like you can get a bachelor/studio in Santa Monica for about 1000.00. I have even seen some 1 Bdrms in Santa Monica for 1200.00 and Culver City for a bit less and the pictures of these apartments look pretty decent.

So I guess my questions are, Are these ads fake? In LA, is anything less than an ocean or mountain view and under 1000sq ft considered crummy? Or are these ads for real but the places are rented within seconds?

Thanks for any replies!

I have a spacious one bedroom apartment in the Sawtelle area for 1,195/month. So yeah, it's very possible to find what you are looking for. Use westsiderentals.com.

Rents have come down a lot in the past year, and the drop was very quick. A year ago with your budget you probably wouldn't have found anything, but now I think you probably would.

Thanks for posting that info, Chichappens! Interesting stuff.

Craigslist seems to be fine. I know there's a lot of scams on it, but its not that hard to see them.

I still wont be looking to actually move until early next year, but I like to keep up to date with the market.
