Trust me, Laurel Canyon is not all "made it" actors & artists and it still has that relaxed vibe. LOTS of 700-900 sq ft houses there and no Leo or Brangelina in sight. More like the guy who got his first pilot or sold his first script. The "made it" people for the most part are elsewhere. Up Kirkwood is probably cheaper than up Lookout Mountain since Lookout leads to nicer neighborhoods like Sunset Plaza. Values have fallen dramatically all over, so lots of sub-million dollar homes around. You might also want to check out Silverlake or Venice if you're trying to find the '60s. Silverlake can get a bit seedy closer to Echo Park. I have personally never understood the attraction to Venice. You can walk six blocks from Julia Roberts' house on Nowita and the gang kids will kill you for a quarter. Go figure.
