Every day. 99% of people do here hence why the traffic is awful. We have a horrible public transportation system and most people don't use it.

How far do you live from your origin public transportation station? How do you get there from home?

How far do you work from your destination public transportation station? How do you get from there to work?

Do you have to transfer? How many times?

What is you daily round trip cost?

What is your commute time from the time you lock your home to the time you walk into your building? Same for the trip home?

How many miles would it be if you drove?

How long would it take if you drove to work? Back home?

These are the key questions, as convenience and time are the biggest factors when comparing public transportation vs. personal car.

When I went to UCLA 15 years ago, I didn't have a car. I didn't have to, even though it would've been convenient at times. Yes, I had to walk to the bus stop, but it wasn't bad and I had plenty of options for where I needed to go. Overall, it was convenient, and factoring the traffic on the Westside, there wasn't much of a time difference despite stopping at every other intersection.

Where I work now, such isn't an option. It's in an industrial area that's a mile-and-half from the nearest bus stop that heads in the right direction. It'd take almost 3 miles of walking, 4 buses, and over 2 hours vs. the 45 minutes of driving (commute). So every morning/afternoon, I drive.

I don't own a car. Yes, I'm one of those people. Insurance is too high for me (a young male, who would rather invest money in other things).

Buy a scooter! Great gas mileage, inexpensive insurance.

Just before he walks into the scooter shop, he should browse these photos:

Photobucket | motorcycle accident Pictures, motorcycle accident Images, motorcycle accident Photos

Money is important but some things are more important, like health.

Ok, MR Debbie Downer, there is always that risk even when you are driving a car!
Charles, it was just an idea, a suggestion but somehow you always oppose people's sincere comments with some sort of a jacked up, cynical view (for whatever reasons) and that gets annoying a bit.

That is yet another reason why I use mass transit as the number of fatal vehicular accidents far outweighs mass transit accidents.

Wow that is a new one on me. I have been pulled over a total of 2 times since I began driving in 1981 one time for speeding and another time for making a turn in front of another driver. I was young back then though and new to driving. Of those people that I know that are pulled over nearly all of them did something that was a violation of some kind. Another thing is if you are in the right, your car is not belching smoke all over the place and is in drivable condition, tires are good and both you and the car look like you are doing what you are supposed to do I doubt you will ever get pulled over.
