Here's an example: My friend owns a bar in downtown LA. He put an ad on craigslist for a part-time barback, paying minimum wage. By the end of the day, he had close to 300 resumes in his email.

exactly! more unemployed than jobs available - you have to have some sort of edge. I was unemployed for 2 months in LA and that might be a drop in the bucket compared to most but it was enough to find out that even Wal-mart wasn't hiring!!! I am just not getting phone calls from places I applied at back in February - position opening!

My wife got her degree last year. No work in her field so she works at a theme park for min wage $8. She is getting anywhere from 8 to 16 hours a week right now. It will pick up in summer, up to 39 1/2 hours a week. No one at the park gets more than 39 1/2 - so no one gets benefits.

benefits? oh ya, i forgot about those. I make $9/hour as a receptionist in DT LA - no benefits though. so, ya, when you're desperate to pay bills you have to sacrifice.

With all due respect, a bar back is not a minimum wage job. They get a good percentage of the bartenders tips. I know for a fact that there are barbacks pulling $40,000 a year even here in Vegas.

Most employers do not want students, they will hire most anyone until they will hire a student.

Figure your taxes at 30%

You're comparing Vegas nightlife to LA's downtown? C'mon now. The amount of sales (tips) doesn't even come close.

Sidenote: I worked as a barback nearby his bar, and never made more than 75 bucks in tips, and had to pay for parking. Minimum wage, btw.
