It might come as a shock to our northern neighbors but Los Angeles may have some lessons for San Francisco regarding fixing our most downtrodden neighborhoods.

Parts of the Tenderloin are also pretty gentrified, at least in terms of amenities, and while I could be wrong on this, the worst parts of Skid Row still seem worse than what you find in the Tenderloin. Then again, my Tenderloin experience has mostly primarily on the nicer streets, and not much in the worst parts (and only during daytime hours), and while my Skid Row experience has also been relatively limited, I've walked through most of the streets and have seen it in the pre-dawn hours when the sidewalks were still a tent city.

I see the article also compares '80s Hollywood to the Tenderloin.

I haven't been to the heart of Skid Row in about two years, and I realize that things can change quickly. But my observation as an outsider to both the Tenderloin and Skid Row is that Skid Row felt sketchier than the Tenderloin, at least during daytime hours.

All that said, I think downtown LA in general (and certainly Hollywood) definitely should be looked at when figuring out how to deal with the Tenderloin.
