My wife and I are relocating to the LA area this summer from Chicago. She will be working in downtown LA and I am evaluating a job transfer to Irvine. Can someone comment on places to live in between and the respective commute to LA and Irvine? Thanks!

Do you or will you have kids?
Rent or Buy?

Check out the train routes (metro and metrolink).

No kids, will rent. Will definitely prefer the train option if possible. Curious about the drive times too, from say La Mirada for example? Thanks.

You guys could live in or around the Irvine area in Orange County and your wife could use the Metrolink to commute to Downtown LA if she is planning to work during regular business hours. She also could use the Amtrak if she purchases a monthly pass from Metrolink which has more extended hours than Metrolink.

Metrolink :: Welcome
(Orange County Line)

Amtrak
Pacific Surfiner train

There's a metrolink station at La Mirada/Norwalk.

The drive from La Mirada to downtown LA goes right up the 5 freeway, which is horrible (the traffic is often very congested because the freeway has only 3 lanes on each side through that section) but doable.

You all could definitely live in La Mirada and take the Orange County Metrolink, one to LA and the other to Irvine, no problem. It's a nice train, very peaceful ride.

Long Beach. There are suburban, urban and coastal options. You can take the train into downtown LA. Drive to irvine is 20 minutes if you leave at 6:45 am and 40 minutes if you leave after 7. In between those times it varies.

long beach is a great option for a childless couple. i would also consider fullerton. both of these cities have rail options to downtown LA. from fullerton, there's also a train to irvine.

Thanks for all the great replies. My wife will be at the USC medical campus just NE of downtown. Is there a shuttle to this area? Looks to be about 1.5mi from Union Station.

USC operates a shuttle bus/tram to the Health Sciences Campus from Union Station. The schedules are here: Auxiliary Services | Transportation | Tram Maps & Schedules
In the morning going from Union Station to Health Sciences frequency is every 10 minutes.
In the evening coming back to Union Station, frequency is 10-15 minutes. Tram frequency drops off to hourly after 6:15PM.

You can also take the L.A. Metro Silver Line or Foothill Silver Streak. Combined these two services leave roughly every 3-5 minutes during peak hours and get to USC Health Sciences Campus in about 5 minutes. The USC Station is on the perimeter of the campus so you will have to walk into the main medical area.
