I have admission in Loyola Marymount University for fall 2010. Me and my wife are looking for housing/apartment for August month. These are the criterias: 1) Rent range: $ 1,000 to $ 1,250 (1 BR / 1 Bath with ~ 600 sq. ft is ok for us) 2) Within 5 miles to LMU. We are from Oklahoma and totally new to LA. Can anyone please suggest some apartments/housing with these criteria’s? Thanks in advance.

Westchester, El Segundo, or Playa Del Rey.

Those general areas are fine. There are lots of older apartments nearby in your price range and the neighborhood is fine. You really should be able to find something along Manchester or just off of it within 6 blocks of Lincoln. That area is actually pretty nice. It will be different than Oklahoma, thats for sure, but not in a bad way. You'll be close to nice beaches in Hermosa and Manhatten(10-15 minute drive), 5 minute drive from a not so great beach(Dockweiler), near the wetlands in Playa Vista, and theres lots of nice restaurants and shops in the immediate area. My brother and his family live there and are very happy.

People run into problems when they want good schools for their kids or need a luxury apartment with granite countertops. Most down to earth people who just want a clean apartment in a safe area and do not own pets don't encounter the problems in Los Angeles apartments that others do.

Playa Vista is nice and close to LMU.

Several "newer" apartments in that area include: Fountain Park, Crescent Park, and Ventana.

I think F.Park and C.Park meet your budget....not sure about Ventana.

stick to westchester, most of the other nearby neighborhoods are too expensive (beach communities) or too sketchy (inglewood). as mentioned, look at places along/near manchester blvd. between lincoln blvd and sepulveda blvd.
