Cannes is world famous, gets extensive coverage and its Palme d'Or really means something. Ditto, to a lesser extent, with the Berlin International Film Festival and its Golden Bear as well as the Venice Film Festival and its Golden Lion. Other film festivals that matter include: Sundance, Toronto, Tribeca, even SXSW.

I know we have the venerable L.A. Film Fest and AFI Fest but these are barely covered by the media, even in their hometown. Do most Angelenos even know when they occur? (hint: LAFF is next month).

We seem to have a film festival for virtually any category imaginable (just check the L.A. Weekly) but I always found it odd that the arguable film capital of the world doesn't have a 800 pound gorilla of a film fest (and no, I don't consider the Oscars or Golden Globes the same sort of festival).

Why, oh, why?

is it necessary? most of the premiers are already here and most of the industry all lives here. having the major festivals in other cities gives industry execs an excuse to get out of town.

Well, the American Cinematheque has some great year-round programming, if that counts. As good as what FilmForum produces back East if you ask me. This being 'Hollywood' and all, I don't know if we really need such a thing. That said, I enjoyed FILMEX back in the day, especially the animated films.

Like BRinSM says, we get the premiers (or we damn-well better, since we produce so many of them and so many are shot here).
