Often, that part of the 5 is super crowded going north, so I think part of it is people collectively wanting to honk their frustrations out.

I just hope nobody ever honks one of those after-market train horns - that might cause some widespread panic.

We all honk because the traffic in that tunnel is always stopped. People are driving home after a hard day's work and are just fed up- that's why I do it anyways. And a lot of those people have an hour commute or more from that point to Palmdale/ Lancaster. So maybe they are just trying to find some humor in a horrible situation.
