I've taken a couple of trips up to Santa Clarita recently and have notcied there's a tunnel you pass under on the 5... a little after the merge with the 405, where everybody starts honking in. Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know where this comes from? It's really weird.

drive through any tunnel in the LA area and you'll experience the same thing. i ride my bike along kanan in the malibu/agoura area fairly often and this can be quite annoying when you don't have a car windows to shield your ears and the sound echoes in the tunnel, car horns can be very loud. another good tunnel for honking is on sepulveda when traveling under the runways at LAX. i'm not sure why people do it, but my parents use to do the same when i was a kid. as a kid, i also used to try to hold my breath through the whole tunnel, i've heard from others they would do the same. i guess we have weird tunnel culture here in LA.

Yes, I think the noise resonance could make the tunnel fall apart and people are just curious to test it. The tunnel you are talking about is the 405N merge to the 5N, it is actually an underpass. It is annoying, but at least now you are anticipating it.

Yep, pretty much any tunnel with a fair amount of depth will experience the cars honking. That was something that I didn't quite understand as a child why all my friends would scream for the bus driver to honk the horn in the tunnel. I bet you 9 times out of 10 that the cars that are honking have children riding in them.

Wow, Dad used to honk going through tunnels or under train tressels (back east) when we were kids. We loved the sound it made, the echoing. I guess some things just don't change.

We do it all the time. Always thought it was fun when we were kids and since I have 6 kids, I don't want them to miss out on the fun.

I was starting to think that this was another Southern California thing that other parts of the nation don't participate in.

My parents did this clear back in the 50's and 60's. It was a sacred family tradition. The tunnel under the runways in Long Beach was one of our special favorites.

The funny thing is, in all of my travels I don't remember people in other states doing this. Anybody know of anywhere else they do it? Any places famous for being (ahem) honked in?

Seems like maybe this is a Southern California thing?

Uh, I've never heard anyone honking in tunnels in my life.
The only thing I do is down shift and gun it so I can hear my exhaust.
