I shocked no one thought of this one...

Hotel California - The Eagles

My favorite song about California.

"On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair..."

Great posts about Warren Zevon. I am a Zevon fan and was not aware of this gem of a song called Carmelita. You got to love the Pioneer Chicken reference as that chain was born in 1961 in Echo Park. But the song is great....reminds me a bit of Dylan's "Desolation Row" , albeit with a more Latin/Spanish flavored acoustic guitar in the background.

Thanks for posting. Zevon was a genius. I think he spent SOME of his early youth in Chicago and Frenso before getting to LA.

Surprisingly, most of this album was recorded in Miami, Fla. But the Eagles were 100% an LA band.

you're absolutely right: warren zevon was born in chicago and moved to fresno with his family at a very young age. i'm not exactly sure when the zevon family moved to LA, but it was definitely early enough that warren spent his formative years (junior high and high school) in socal.

there's a great quote from his son, jordan, who explains why los angeles was the setting for some of WZ's most memorable songs:

"Great writers write what they know, and my dad knew Los Angeles. He was born in Chicago, and if he'd stayed there or gone to New York, his music would have been of that place. L.A. just happened to be the winner of the pageant."

the author of the article linked above also makes some interesting observations about the singer:

Zevon was like James Ellroy writing folk-rock songs. Los Angeles and all its madness is hard at the heart of his pavement tales, from the forlorn junkie of "Carmelita," who scores his heroin by the Pioneer Chicken stand on Alvarado, to the beastie who dines at Trader Vic's in "Werewolves of London." But for his son, there's no need to ponder which is the best among those L.A. songs: "'Desperadoes Under the Eaves,' that one is his greatest song of all, I'd say, and its image of L.A. is so strong."

here are two songs by beck, who was born and raised in los angeles and used his hometown as fodder for several of his tracks.

the first song, Qué Onda Guero?, is based on his observations about the bustling latino street life of westlake/pico-union:

See the vegetable man in the vegetable van with a horn that's honking like a mariachi band

Abuelitas with plastic bags walking to the church with the Spanish candles

Mara Salvatrucha in the midnight sun

Rampart boys with loaded rifles
Guatemalan soccer ball instant replays
Mango ladies, vendedoras

Alla en la Pico...La Pico y Vermont
Hey vamos a jugar futbol ahí en el Griffith park

Yeah now I'm going to LACC, I'm taking a ceramics class

Que Onda Guero- Beck with Lyrics - YouTube

Hollywood Freaks

I wanna know what makes you scream, be your twenty million dollar fantasy
Treat you real good, expensive jeans
Hollywood freaks on the Hollywood scene

People look so snooty, take pills make them moody

Hollywood nuns with the Hollywood phones

Beck - Hollywood Freaks - YouTube
