Is north shore a bad move for bi-racial family?
Help! I need some honest advice. We are considering relocating from the Michigan to the New Orleans area, and I have some specific concerns regarding our family . . .
We are considering moving to the Mandeville or Madisonville areas because we want to live in a safe community with good schools. Is this a correct assumption?
Also, we are a young family (all kids under 7) formed by adoption. All of my children are multi-racial (white, black, and native american). Do communities like Mandeville or Madisonville have racial problems or undertones? Would we have a hard time being accepted in these communities.
Any thoughts? Anything else I should be concerned about?

The North Shore areas are good places to reside in the New Orleans area. However, to be honest, I think the entire region has racial stereotypes. I think this is one of the things hampering the recovery of the area. I am not sure what your children might experience. You might read other opinions here. But I lived in NOLA for 17 years and I've never been in a more racist city. Good luck!

Unfortunately I have to agree
I hate to say it (even in today's world), but I agree with micktooth - LA overall has racist undertones. The north shore is a good area to be in Southern LA (probably the best), but you are not escaping racism by moving anywhere in LA. However I will say it is one of the safest areas in LA and has some of the best (if not THE best) schools in LA...well by LA education standards.
BTW I was born just outside of NO and lived in LA for 30+ years before moving to Colorado last year after the storm. I lived on the north shore (Madisonville to be exact) that last 4 of those years...

NO and Northshore
Northshore is the home of David Duke so what do you expect. Its a shame that city that is so ethniclly mix have so much prejudice in the area, It really holds back the progress of the area that pound for pound has more natural resources than any other state. Yes white men, your daughters love black men. Get used to it.

Racism is something you find when you are looking for it... not in the past ,but certainly now.
People stare at what they are not used to seeing, so yes... you may get stares, but you probably be fine. I love NOLA and I love South LA. Great place with great people. Do not judge that area by Katrina & the media coverage...
David Duke is an idiot and 98% of Louisianians believe that.

I have lived on the northshore for more eight years. We have many bi-racial families that are friends of ours. It is a very safe and non-judgmental community. There is a large population of adopted children from Russia, China and South America. Not one of my friends has complained nor experienced prejudice within our community. They have experienced it in the next state over to the east but not here. As for David Duke, the majority of the state dislikes him and what he stands for. Just a few idiots out their.....

You talking about black racism against whites, or the other way around?
I have seen and read about plenty of black racism against whites, much of it in the form of violent crime like assaults and murders. In my area white folks have been assaulted for being white more times than I care to think about, including a co-worker here. Back home my brother was, for no other reason than being white in the wrong neighborhood.
As for white racism against blacks, it usually has nothing to do with skin color, and everything to do with bad behavior and crime rates.
At least whites very rarely assault or murder minorities. Sorry to those of you who want to think otherwise, but that's what the statistics show.

King of a controversial statement there, pal, and not backed up by the numbers.. these black man-white women relationships are still a pretty small percentage, and I just read an article in the paper about this within the last week. And I have yet to see this black-white thing on any big scale in any of the 6 cities I've lived in. More than there used to be, yes. All white daughtes loving black men. Not hardly.
Maybe wishful thinking on your part ???

Louisiana is first and foremost a Creole state. There are many, many individuals here of mixed blood. In the Slidell area, I see many children in the public schools of mixed heritage - with a variety of races present, black, white, Indian, Asian, Hispanic and Filipino. I think your children will fit in just fine here.

Unfortunately, Mr. Kool.
I am not talking about the whole population but this is a fact. Black men tend to be more passionate than their white counterpart to women of any race. White guys have alot of good characteristic that i wish black males would adopt, like being buiness oirientated. I do respect the lady who said that there is a like black racism. I wouldn't want to associated or have anyone as a neighbor who is involved in criminal behavior. The Northshore and New Orleans its time to put away the racism. Look what happen to Atlanta when it put racism away. It became a world class city.
