Question What types of insurance will I need when we move to the Northshore?

We're looking to relocate to the Northshore area (Mandeville, Madisonville), and I am wondering how much I should anticipate paying for things like home owners insurance, flood insurance? Any other insurance I'll need to carry? wind or storm?

We are trying to get an idea of the cost of living in this area. Are there any specific home-related services that we should consider? Pest control? We are relocating from Michigan, and we have never been to LA before, so I'm not quite sure what to expect.

Thanks all!

We currently live in Madisonville. I have several co-workers who just purchased homeowners insurance due to new moves. The insurance situation since Hurricane Katrina & Rita has been quite ugly. Many insurance companies have stopped writing policies so there are very few choices remaining. I know one co-worker was able to get her insurance down to $2200 on a home worth $160,000 after being quoted $4800 right out the box. I can get the specifics and let you know more tomorrow. Other than that, I love the area. My husband is being transferred to Nashville and he is having to drag me kicking and screaming. Let me know if you need any other info. Like I said I will get back to you tomorrow once my co-worker comes back in.

Thanks so much - I would really appreciate more info . . . we really don't know what we are getting into here, as my hubby is being relocated to NOLA, and we don't know a single soul in this area!
Thanks again.

I live in Madisonville. My home is valued at $304,000. My homeowner's insurance is about $200/mo. My wind/hail insurance is $100/mo. My flood insurance is $300/YR. Add another $300/mo for property taxes.

Hope this helps. Your insurance may be even higher since you would be establishing a new policy down here.
