Default Does anyone else dislike/hate the Northshore (Mandeville)

I don't see why people are so crazy about the Northshore. First of all, it is extremely snobbish and it doesn't really offer anything in terms of entertainment. There is no nightlife or outdoor activities because it is too built up. The schools are also overrated and overcrowded. There is a strong feeling of elitism or superiority if you don't fit their "mold." This is not the place for rednecks, good ole boys, young people, or lower-middle class by ANY means.

Read the comment section on the Times-Picayune website. Most Northshore animosity seems to be between Jefferson and St. Benard Parishes vs. St. Tammany Parish.

Prairieville and Gonzales sound similar to what the OP is complaining about. I've never spent time on the northshore so I can't comment on it but with all the new neighborhoods and good schools in our cities suburbs as a whole, I can imagine one would say the same about Ascension Parish.

Most of the Northshore/Southshore hate that I've observed is usually Northshore residents making comments about how they don't have to deal with the crime, overcrowdedness, and dirtyness of the Southshore and of course Southshore residents already feel that Northshore residents are like leeches to Jefferson and Orleans jump to on the offense. From what I've seen it's mainly Metairie residents who complain about Mandeville and Covington residents causing traffic problems and then Slidell and Pearl River area residents unhappy about the migration of residents from St. Bernard and New Orleans East.

Well, if you had said it was not the place for rednecks and been referring to only Mandeville and Covington, I may have slightly agreed with you. However, I think to say that the northshore as a whole isn't redneck-friendly would be inaccurate. The smaller communities have just as many rednecks IMO as any other small community in the south.

As far as outdoor activities, I don't have any direct experience with them as I do not live on the Northshore, but I do know that they exist. There is at least one state park that I know of for sure. I believe there are other wildlife areas/trails. Plus there is ample fishing opportunity.

Also, I really wouldn't call the Northshore too built up. I see a ton of forests and undeveloped land every time I go there. The satellite imagery seems to agree with me.

Whatever our opinions may be, the facts are: St. Tammany Parish schools rank very highly in the state; St. Tammany Parish is one of the fastest growing parishes in the state. It isn't easy to accomplish either of those things if you are a Louisiana Parish. Most suffer from both poor school systems and population loss.

MetroBTR,
Thanks for defending my hometown. As usual, you hit the nail on the head.

I think alot of people hate on Mandeville because it's like the pretty cheerleader on the squad. You want to hate her because she appears perfect, and you don't want to try to be her friend, because you just might end up liking her.
For the record, there are lots of country folk and good ole boys in Mandeville. My family who lives there can attest to that And yes, there are snobs too. There are lots of outdoor activities such as the Tammany Trace (running, cycling, horsebackriding), Fountainbleu State Park, the Tchefuncte River for jet skiing and boating, the lake to fish and sail in, etc.
I will echo what has been said- the schools are good. Check out test scores and programs offered. Many of them are recognized as National merit schools. I went through that system, and my mother worked at one of them for ages.
There are lots of bars and restaurants with bands and entertainment. There are festivals and parades throughout the year. I mean, have you ever even been to the Northshore?!

the northshore is a piece of ****! and the southshore is a even bigger piece of ****!
ive seen and been to both lived in both and this is my summary!

Northshore:
pro's: nice, quiet, place. great if your afraid of new orleans and black people.

Con's: wayyyy to strict, police dictatorship, much higher penalties for crimes than southshore, local friendly, not outsider friendly, majority "white", but still the drug trade in northshore is present, but not half as bad as southshore. very stuck up attitude, def elitism, ironically, all the old people in northshore hate southshore, but the young crowd loves the southshore for sure!!!!!!

*northsore teens n 20's+ age range, they get the picture, they dont take after their parents and most are waiting for them to die out.

-------------------------------------------------

Southshore:
Pros: Well alota fun obviously, bourbon, but not only that much more social, all different types of people, great day n night life, always the more big eassy lifestyle, more relaxed laid back and of course, your open to more diverse culture, so if your a dinasour from the northshore, you wont like it here unless you hired police to escort you everywhere and painted all the blacks white. (no racism intended, just implying how pathetic northshore is)

Cons: much more crime, poverty, drug trade, but also alot more leniiant on drugs too. and prostitution , once your in the system down here, your ****ed though esp in orleans parish with this new district attorney really beefing things up. very easy to get caught up in the fast lane lifestyle.

It's honestly the worst place I've ever lived. Nothing but preplanned subdivisions, strip malls, and the like. It's not that it's over developed. It's that's it's just crap built on top of crap with no planning. It's as if someone said Oh here's some land- let's build some apartments and a ****ing Target. Also a Minor thing is the complete lack of streetlights, I can't see anything at all past like 5:00 at night. The schools suck, the entertain sucks, the atmosphere sucks, but the shopping is great. The only plus side is the Tammany Trace, but even that is marred by the people who are at best rude and disgusting.
