Question Apartment recommendations in Leesville/neighboring towns?

Websites like Apartments.com & Rent.com haven't helped me with this in the least...

I just got married in June, & my husband is stationed at Fort Polk. We want to get an apartment together down there (neither of us have ever rented an apt before so we're probably not even doing this right) that's clean, safe, near Ft Polk, and doesn't cost a whole lot. But he doesn't have a car, so he can't really go driving around Leesville, looking for decent apartments. I'm pretty much stuck in New England til we have a place down there, as I'm too financially strapped right now to drive or fly down to help him look at places. He's thinkin' about renting a car for a couple of days, just so he can explore the area and get information about/visit apts in Leesville. But since its a rental car & he'll only have it for a few days, I'm trying to look up apts in the area so he's not just wandering around in an expensive rental car & wasting time because he doesn't have specific destinations. I've spent HOURS on the internet up here, & can't find many apartment listings at all... many were the same ones.. over and over... Chaparral Apts came up a LOT. Their website looked great (even if they did have a pretty ridiculous non-refunable pet fee of $400).. but people left bad reviews on yahoo.com about it... anyone ever live there? How was it?

Does anyone know of other nice/safe/clean apt complexes in that area? All we can afford is a 1-bedroom type, perhaps $600/month at most..

We're also interested in other towns nearby that didn't seem like too far of a drive to Ft Polk.. so if anyone knows of good apts in De Ridder/Rosepine/New Llano/Anacoco.. please let me know!

Thanks!

I live in a 3 bedroom at Sycamore Point Apartments and I love it. My rent just increased to $725 for the remodeled 3 bedroom, so I am sure you can get a smaller one for a decent price. This and Timber ridge would be the only apartments I would stay in if you want to stay away from trash. My husband installed cable all over Leesville, deridder, etc and these are the safest. You will not find a lot of child molesters, drug dealers, etc here. The only thing is down Jean Chapel, ,like the rest of Leesville is a nasty trailer park, where 3 registered sex offenders live there and there is drug use. There are also located about 1-2 minutes from the entrance of Ft. Polk on Entrance Rd, with all of the fast food and the dollar general. There are about 10 minutes if that to Wal-mart, yet off the main street 171, so you don't have to deal with the traffic or noise.

If you haven't been here be prepared. It is a nasty town with very nasty trailer parks. Where the trailers are from like 50's-80's and are seriously failing apart. Be careful where you pick an apartment.

*There are some apartments that look decent online off of highway 28, but they are low-income apartments and I would STAY AWAY!

Good Luck!

Chaparral are extremely small! Everyone I know that has lived there hated it. However, if you cannot afford to live here, they are your best bet.

Why pick Sycamore? Large, safe, covered bus stops for children, playground on every street, a pool under works, tennis court, basketball court, handball wall, and a walking trail around the complex. This and Timber Ridge were prior military housing. They honestly are your best bet.

What apartment would you recommend that are maybe 1 bedroom. I am moving to Leesville next month. I have heard that there are many shady areas of leesville. Other than timber ridge and sycamore point, what would you recommend.
