Default Driver's License

Hey everyone.

I just wanted to ask - I'm an incoming freshman at Tulane, and I do not have my license yet. I wanted to know if it would be possible, as a legal resident of New York, to get my driver's license in New Orleans.

I would be taking a course and following the usual steps, of course. I just want to know if I can do it having residency in another state.

Anyone know?

It depends on the state. I do not live in Louisiana yet, so I can't tell you for sure.

If you intend to remain a New York resident, I would probably be very advisable to get your NY license. For me, New Mexico would not give me a NM license without a ton of documentation proving I was a resident. Whereas California didn't care what my mailing address was as long as I had a CA permanent address.

Even if you had a NewYork drivers license, you would be required to get a Louisiana Drivers License and transfer your vehicle title and registration within 30-90 days of moving to Louisiana.

Default I belive you are except

I believe that students are except from registering their cars or getting a Louisiana license (but that is if they have an existing license; check the DMV site).

In Louisiana, if you are a student you can keep your liscence in any state. You can also change your liscence over, but it is up to you. I have had an Alabama liscence in Louisiana for 4 years.

As for getting a liscence in Louisiana, you need an address for sure. Your Insurance will also have to be changed over if you change your state driver's liscence.
