Where in the city will he be working? Are there any amenities you specifically want near your apartment?

If you don't care for city living then a place in Metairie will do fine. I'm not 100% sure on parts of the city so I won't comment on that.

Metairie is pretty safe but can be a little sterile. Destrehan has a little more country charm, Kenner is very much hit or miss in terms of safety.

Carrollton, Broadmoor, Mid-City & Lakeview are all safe places within the city with lots of ammenities. You would have an easy commute form any of these areas (you might even have an easier time than if you were far out in Metairie)

Metairie can be a little cheaper, but as aab7855 stated, its quite sterile. It is a continuous mass of slab ranch houses that are between 30-50 years old, with a few big box stores clustered on a highway. If you look down a street, it's looks no different from suburban Iowa.

Old Metairie is a nicer area with more local ammenities and has a more New Orleans feel, but it will be more expensive.

I'm sorry for being a grammar nazi but it's "amenities". I don't want to sound snooty but I've seen this too many times to keep my silence.
