Default Motels in Cameron

I am planning on a visit in October and would like some ideas on affordable, clean, friendly motels in Cameron, LA., or Holly Beach. Can anyone help?

I was just in Cameron and Holly Beach a month ago. I live about an hour away. We were devastated by Rita. I know most people don't realize that since the focus is on Katrina and New Orleans. I don't think you'll be finding any places to stay. There are hardly any homes left much less motels. There are a few houses going up and a couple of temporary type buildings store owners are using for business. There is NOTHING on Holly Beach. It's all gone. The stores are gone. The cabins are gone. There are a few RVs scattered here and there. It is a very humbly experience to drive down there and see demolished houses and cars washed up against the side of the road. I'm not saying don't go. It's one of the best places on earth to me but you're best bet is probably to find a place in Sulphur and drive there. Are you going just as a tourist or visiting someone?
Someone else out there may know of something to rent but I really doubt it.

Default Cameron Motels..

Me & my husband passed through Hackberry, Holly Beach,Cameron,etc.. this past weekend. Camps are coming up @ Holly Beach. There's a motel in Hackberry & 1 in Cameron. Some friends stayed @ the Cameron Motel Saturday night while visiting some of their friends in Cameron. My friend said the motel was something for the company men..meaning it wasn't like a Holiday Inn. Hope this information helps.

Default I want to make a trip from Iowa to Cameron, La

My family wants to take the most direct route to the Gulf from Iowa (and avoid huge cities like Houston), and Cameron seems like an almot directly south trip. I understand these posts are old, but is the city rebuilt? Are there hotels in the area?

Looks like nobody familiar with the current situation over there is going to step in and help you out here. If you're looking for a Gulf of Mexico beach to relax on Cameron is probably not the place to go. If you're just interested in visiting that area you should consider staying at a hotel/motel in Lake Charles, just a short drive from Cameron.

Another thing is that La. Hwy 171 between Shreveport and Lake Charles is still under a lot of construction. Even AAA will tell you the best route from Shreveport to Lake Charles is via I-49 to Alexandria and from Alexandria to Iowa, La. (Yes, there's an Iowa in La.) on I-10 and from there west to Lake Charles.

Hopefully somebody will read this and give you some some more up-to-date info.

P.S. If you want to visit a Gulf beach, you can get to Galveston, Texas without going through Houston.

You have to WANT to visit Cameron to actually go there. If you're just looking for a beach, head west to Galveston or east to Mississippi/Alabama. From Lafayette (assuming you come down 49) it's about 3 hours to Mississippi's gulf coast. Add another 1.5 and you can be near Gulf Shores, AL.

I made a call for you denver, as my dad goes out there every couple of weeks to meet with guys at the heliport during crew change from off-shore. He was there 2 weeks ago and concurred with the above posters. You never mentioned your business there. If you are going to see some friends, by all means stay in Lake Charles and go visit them. If you were just looking a Gulf beaches, it's not the vacation spot you are looking for. Dad said a few local business owners are in the midst of rebuilding their stores, and the hospital's grand opening was this week, but other than that, there isn't much of anything else. Other than to work, he said the only reason to go there is to see the aftermath first hand.

As the above posts state, people from outside the area were saturated with Katrina news in '05 and really weren't given the full lowdown on Hurrican Rita that came ashore 2 weeks later on the Texas/Louisiana line. A huge part of the region took serious damage and small towns on the coast , like Cameron, were basically washed away by the storm surge and winds. Not damaged but, completely washed away. God was good that more people weren't killed than there were.

So there you go. Thats up to date. I definitely am not trying to steer you away from the state, just updating about that area. Come enjoy the state, great food, and friendly people and have a good time.
