Cool Can We Live At/Near the Gulf??

We may be moving to Lake Charles, LA and know nothing about the area. We love the ocean/Gulf and would like to know if there are beach communities within 50 miles of Lake Charles where we can purchase a home and have a view of the Gulf? Many thanks.

There are towns in Cameron Parish such as Creole and Cameron that you can try out.

and watch your home wash away in the next hurrican that hits. Most of Gulfport and Biloxi was a wasteland after Katrina.

The gulf coast of Louisiana is not known for its beauty. Not to mention the fact that the mosquitoes will eat you alive. We spent time at Holly Beach in the past (R.I.P. after Hurricane Rita) But Holly Beach was a very "touristy" kind of area with very few, if any, full time residents, and the camps there were mostly weekenders and very modest. They are starting to rebuild and some of the new houses look pretty nice. But for the most part, it is still a wasteland, and I don't know if you could even find any property for sale there. You might also check out Hackberry and Cameron, both of which are on the water (but not on the ocean).

Lake Charles has so much going for it (casinos, for one), I would just live there and go to the beach on weekends.

I love the Gulf Coast because I love to see all the ships and shrimp boats and dolphins out there. As a beachfront it is pretty lame, but it is really fun to go crabbing out in the surf. I think you would be better off finding a place on Lake Calacasieu several miles inland. It is a large lake and the area around it is actually really pretty IMO.

Lake Charles is nothing like the gulf coast

Think you've been in Utah to long to give advice?

Put it like this. The Eastern Gulf Coast (Alabama, Florida, & Mississippi) is nothing like the Western Gulf Coast (Louisiana, Texas). I think Busta was trying to hint that the OP will be in for a surprise if he/she expects the Gulf around Lake Charles to be like what they'd find in Biloxi, Gulf Shores, or Destin

20yrsinBranson summed it up quite nicely.

That would have made it much more clear. Except Texas' coast is much like the stretch from Biloxi to the panhandle.
