Hi! We are moving to the Alexandria area because of a job change for my husband. We have so many questions! What are the best areas to live in Alexandria? Is it better to find a home outside of this town like in Pineville, Ball or Tioga? What about south of Alexandria such as Woodworth? What is the school system like? We have a 7 yo 2nd grader - so i really need to know about the school system. Looking to rent and then later to buy but first we need to know which area to look for a home! any advice or help would be appreciated!

thanks

www.GreatSchools.net (http://www.GreatSchools.net - broken link) compares schools within a state but not across state lines.

Default Retiring to Alexandria/Pineville

We took a trip to Alexandria and were surprised. The twin cities were larger than we thought and the hills were beautiful.

Woodworth seemed to have a lot of plant/tree nurseries. We plan on looking in the hills north and northwest of Alexandria for a place to live.

Have you looked at the Alexandria newspaper that is online? We are reading it daily.

Does anyone have any apartment recommendations? I may need a place to live during the workweek in the Alexandria area that would be appropriate for a single female. Thanks!

I thought the same thing. It's the freeway and the view of the city from it.

What kind of job did your husband get? Consider himself lucky to call Alexandria home. Best wishes!

well the best neighborhoods in alexandria are the lake district, tennyson oaks, landmark, west pointe, st. andrews on the links, and crossgates. These homes are all above the 300K range (except for a few in west pointe and crossgates). If you want a home in the 180s to 240s, you might wanna check out Bocage. They have some new homes being built there. Alexandria has all the shopping places including the mall and nicer restaurants. Pineville is good too but you would still have to come down to Alexandria to go to the mall. However, Alexandria is a little more expensive than Pineville when it comes to properties, utilities, etc. Woodworth is a very small town south to Alexandria. You would like it if you wanted some country living. The best public school in Alexandria for elem would be J B Nachman Elem. However, because of the fact that LA has really low standard education (except Nachman), people decide to send their kids to a private school: Alexandria Country Day School (preK to 8th grade). But their tuition is really high: 5,000 for one school year, any grade. I grew up in GA and the public schools there were just as good as Alexandria Country Day which charges you $. Our public schools also had lots of extra curriculum activities and programs that Country Day does, for free. But Rapides county public schools don't really have the $ to do all those things that you could do if you were in a diff state.

What is the weather like? Temps throughout the year? My husband also has the opportunity to transfer down there (from Ohio) and are seriously contemplating it! The humidity doesn't bother me, I really just don't want cold/snow.
