Default Moving to Lafayette and University of Louisiana

I am from the New York, NY area and am considering a move to Lafayette to do graduate work at the University of Louisiana. I will likely opt to rent an apartment near the university. I've checked out a number of website for general background on the city, but would also be very interested in any suggestions you may have regarding where to live, or other things I need to consider. Thanks!

Stay away from the corridor above University. There is student housing up there for students, but the area can be dangerous and there are several prominent bars and clubs with all the consequences those places entail.
check out something further south along Johnston Street, although traffic could be ridiculous sometimes (by our standard, not anywhere as bad as NY).
You might also want to check out some places on South College Road which connect the back way to the University campus area. There is a nice looking Warehouse district styled loft complex that was recently built there.
Also, if you dont mind a little bit longer driver, the University apartments off of Bertrand and West Congress Street are pretty decent and around lots of food places and activity (next to the Cajundome/Cajun field) and on campus itself is a really nice set of buildings called Campus Crossings.
