Smile From Houston, TX to Lake Charles, LA

I'm thinking about taking a job with the state of LA. This job would put me in the Lake Charles Area to work. Moving from Houston, I'm kinda looking forward to getting out of a big city to something smaller. I have a wife and young kids 6,4 and one on the way. I'm looking for a nice place to live with good public schools (can't afford private) and that is safe. I wouldn't mind more rural areas being that i am an outdoors man. I love hunting, fishing, and horses. I am black, my wife is white and my kids are black, and bi racial. Is it true what they say about LA being back woods and racist? hope not, Is there anywhere I can get a couple of acres to build on:cool, or maybe an older home in a decent neirborhood? Any suggestions? Appreciate the help.

I'm about 20 miles outside of Lake Charles. There are lots of biracial families here.

See, to me, Lake Charles is big. We live in a tiny community east of Lake Charles. Lots of people commute to Lake Charles to work and we do alot of our shopping there too.

Crime rate has risen but it still isn't what I consider a dangerous city. You just have to watch your back a little more than you used to. Coming from Houston, you are probably already a little more "street smart" than alot of people here.

It also depends on how far you are willing to drive to work too. There are lots of places in the country for sale and also alot of places in the very small towns of Southwest Louisiana. Look up some realtors in the area. There are quite a few online.

Thumbs up South Lake Charles

Hi, I was born and raised in Lake Charles. It was a great place to grow up! I lived on the South side of the city in what is called South Lake Charles. The best public schools are in the Barbe District (ex St John Elementry,Prien Lake Elementry,SJ Welch Middle School & Barbe High School). Deepwoods Subdivison, Gettings Estates, Greywood or Grey Plantation Subdivision, Barbe Woods, Hollyhill are all very good places to look for a home. Hope this helps you some. I moved to Orange County, CA when I was 23 (about 6 yrs ago) and have been thinking about making a move back. Lake Charles is a great place to raise kids!

I've been living in Lake Charles for many years, I see this city has some issues about racial discrimination. Schools down here is suck!!! teaching quality is at really bad! I've been going to college in Lake Charles, some of my experience is that professors have attitude with black and minorities students, especially black students. I think Texas is a lot better than here. Especially your kids is bi racial, It will be better for them to go schools where there are large diversity, so their values can be accepted and nurutred in respectful envrionment. It was freaked me out when I see one of the professor humiliate a black student in front of other white students. It was worse than when the professor is head of department of Accounting, at McNeese State Univeristy. Now I can't wait to get thhe freak out of here!

It's obvious you have a grudge against a certain professor. So that makes Texas better than Louisiana in your eyes.
