I live (near) downtown Monroe, and the paper mill smell actually permeates the walls/windows on certain nights. I can't even imagine what the folks over in West Monroe have to deal with! So, is there anywhere around here that doesn't get the smell? I understand a lot of it has to do with the direction of the wind, so maybe there's nowhere to escape it. I can't live too far out in the sticks or I'd never make it to work on time every morning.

I live out by Cheniere Lake & we rarely smell it out here....only when the wind blows from the east. I work in WM as well and most days only smell it as I go past the paper mill.

I've started to notice a trend. Most nights the smell is just outside, but about once a week it actually permeates the walls/windows and gets inside the house. It usually happens early in the morning, 4-6am. It was so bad this morning that my wife & I actually got dressed in a hurry and left the house as fast as we could to escape the smell. When we get home tonight, outside will smell fine but the smell will still be inside the house until we air it out. I know it's not just me because I've talked to my neighbors and they all are experiencing the same thing. I don't know anything about paper mills, but I'm guessing maybe they do some kind of "cleaning" on the machines at night and that's the reason for the strong smell. And maybe once a week they do a more thorough cleaning and that might be the reason for the stronger-than-usual smell. Again, just guesses by me. mod edit Thank God I am only renting and will (hopefully) be leaving this horrible place soon.

Isn't there some regulatory body that controls air quality? I'm wondering if contacting the EPA would do any good?
