I am a carpenter and my wife is an LPN...we have a 4 yr old son.
We are looking to move to either Lake Charles, Baton Rouge, or New Orleans.

We like country and city life...we LOVE New Orleans and visit there quite often. We have also been to Lake Charles and liked it. (we lived a while in central La and have always enjoyed it the further down south we visited)

My wife intends to go back to school either to get her RN or Physical Therapy Assistant degree. We are concerned about where is best for our son. And of course the job market.

Would be interested in hearing from people whom are familiar with these areas to give us feed back on perhaps housing, education system for our son, and job market especially for me being a carpenter/construction worker.

Thanks in advance for the input.

Not to be condescending on Lake Charles but I would choose Lafayette over it any day, aside from being on a pretty lake, Lafayette, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans blows it out of the water (no pun intended). What is it that you exactly desire in a city or metro area? Where do you like to live (suburbs, rural)?

well, we have lived in the "country" {roughly 30mins from the city} and we have lived in the city...

We like to get out and about and do things (music, food, fishing, etc). My wife wants to go back to school. She loves Lafayette , I am unsure of the job market for me in that area, being a carpenter. I am trying to get on a big project in Lake Charles.

We really would like to be a little bit away from the city, but not so far that my lady has to drive too far to get back and forth to work.

Of course we have always had fun in New Orleans, but with a lil one starting pre-k this year, we wouldnt know where to begin to look for a place around there!!!

We keep thinking at least being a lil closer, we can always drive to Lafayette, or New Orleans for the day.

Being in my working world is tough...course the Jen being a nurse, it isn't so hard for her!!

There is more construction in Lafayette, which would be a plus if self-employed.

Lake Charles to New Orleans is hardly a days drive, it's not very long but that would be 6 hours on the road not including stopping for gas.

Default Make the move yet?

...Not sure if you have made the move yet so take this for what it is worth...

It has been many years, but we lived in Lake Charles and loved it. As far as job opportunity for you wife give Nursing Careers and Medical Jobs | Ochsner Health System a look. They have openings across the state so that might help inform your decision.

I hope you find/found a good spot for your family. I miss Louisiana, especially with winter coming on.

edit: Not sure what happened with that url, I guess just copy/paste it. Good Luck!
