Hi, I visited the south recently including Louisiana, and want to come back more often!

I'm looking (in the distant future) to get a home on a bayou/river/lake, mainly as a vacation home, and possibly to live in once I retire.

Where would you recommend to look to find a quiet/nice home with a bayou (or river/lake) in the backyard? I'm currently looking at Breaux Bridge...

Thanks.

A nice home on a decent body of water , THAT DOES NOT FLOOD , can be a pretty penny . Do your homework very carefully so as not to regret it later .

I would recommend looking in Pointe Coupee Parish, in the town of New Roads. It is a small quaint town that keeps the old Creole-South Louisiana heritage & culture. It is located on False River, absolutely beautiful, it is more of a large lake, the MS river once was connected with it. The town has about 5,000 residents, and has a number of large homes, town homes, small condos, and older Creole/Acadian/Plantations homes on the water front. If you choose to live in the town on the river it is more expensive then living across the river in a smaller older village where the homes are cheaper, but a 20 minute drive to access the town. All be it, New Roads is about 45-50 minutes northwest of Baton Rouge and about an hr and ten minutes from Lafayette, but it generally is considered apart of the Baton Rouge area....I truly believe this is the most beautiful parish in Louisiana, and a gem of South Louisiana.

I agree with New Roads. Love that town, pretty surroundings and active lake activity.

I'm originally from Louisiana and I've driven along False River on LA Highway 1 towards New Roads hundreds of times. I agree that this area is pretty with houses and condos right on the water's edge.

The property right on False River is extremely expensive especially on the New Roads side . What they refer to as " the island side " is a little more reasonable , if you can call it that .
