Along I-10 in Louisiana I noticed a ton of gas stations with often-unnamed casinos attached to them, but I never really had time to stop. Do these rather small casinos traditionally have bars in them? What about smoking? Do they offer food? Also in the 60's and 70's were they a common sight at gas stations in this state?

There are countless gas stations here that have one or two slot machines. Some of the larger ones you can smoke in and probably have a bar. The smaller ones usually have a separate room with about 20 machines.

I've not been in one of these places in years but last time I stopped at one, the ciggie smoke met me at the door and it was enough to almost knock me out. One of my distant relatives who has COPD and wears a portable oxygen device just can't get enough time in places like this. He doesn't smoke but whenever I run into him, he reeks of ciggie smoke from spending time playing video poker in these joints. Plus he's on Social Security and I know he doesn't have the income to blow on these places... he only talks about what he wins and not how much he loses, typical gambler's denial.

I'm not anti-gambling but due to the nature of these truck-stop casinos, video poker is the crack-cocaine of gambling due to their ubiquitous nature and ease of access. I personally have dealt with many folks who have been in financial dire straits due to compulsive gambling either legally or illegally. Too much access allows for abuse IMHO.

But these Video Poker Parlors (yeah...truck stops / convenience stores) are cash-cows for the owners and the genie has long left the bottle. Sad shame. . . .smart people generally steer clear of these ciggie-smoke stink pits. Not good for your health ...both physically, mentally and most of all . . . financially!
